Innovation should be an integral part of any business plan. This sentiment was echoed by the Chief Executive Officer of Investment Fiji, Godo Mueller- Teut.

Given Fiji’s distance location from the major trading hubs of the world, Fijian businesses have to adapt inventive ways of doing businesses. Mr. Mueller- Teut says there is no doubt Fiji produces some of the unique and authentic products and services in the world.

“Innovation in any business brings dynamism in their products and service. With fierce competition in the market, Fijian businesses have to think outside the box to create unique products and services. Innovation is all about creating a product or a service that is distinctive from the rest and is of premium quality,” Mr. Mueller- Teut said.

One of the ways Investment Fiji has been trying to encourage innovation in the country is through the Prime Minister’s International Business Awards. The Awards is a premier event where the best in the business are recognised for their hard work, tenacity and most importantly contribution towards growing Fiji’s economy.

“The Excellence in Innovation Award will recognise a company that has brought about a culture of change, tapped into non- traditional markets and created a new product through innovative ways. This category will recognize the bright and creative mind and ideas in Fiji’s private sector,” Mr. Mueller- Teut said.

The Excellence in Innovation Award was won by the Rosie Holiday’s Travel Group last year. The company contributed significantly to the Fijian economy by chartering flights from China and Taiwan and bringing in visitors to our shores. It was a one of a kind initiative by any travel group in the country.

Managing Director of Rosie Holidays Travel Group, Tony Whitton says winning the Award last year symbolised due respect given to their company.

“I want to encourage businesses and exporters to enter the Prime Minister International Business Awards to show the world the talent and quality of our goods and services that can hold its own on the International stage”, Mr. Whitton said.

The category is sponsored by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism. Permanent Secretary,  Shaheen Ali says the Ministry recognizes the importance of micro, small, and medium enterprises sector as a bedrock for sustainable and inclusive growth and catalyst for innovation.

“The Fijian Government also recognises entrepreneurial spirit and the need to harness the creative energy of our young people and in this regard will launch the Young Entrepreneurship Scheme or the YES that will incentivise the youths to develop innovative products, technology or services,” Mr Ali said.
