The Government of Japan handed over facilities worth over $180,000 to the Chevalier Training centre in Wainadoi, Navua on Thursday.

As part of the Embassy of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) the facilities handed over include a new classroom, kitchen and dining hall as well as a sheltered walk-way.

Embassy of Japan Chargé d’ Affaires Tsuguyoshi Hada said the programme was implemented to empower those at grassroots level.

“The GGP Programme in Fiji has been widely implemented in areas such as education, water supply, health, transportation, agriculture and fisheries since 1990,” Mr Hada said.

“To date, 348 projects have been implemented under the programme which amounts to an approximate value exceeding US$20.88 million (FJ$41.84m). Japan has a strong commitment to the development of Fiji’s education sector and has now implemented 193 projects worth US$12.56m  (FJ$25.17m) since 1990,” he said.

Mr Hada said the facilities would provide a conducive learning environment for the delivery of quality education.

“I am confident that this assistance to Chevalier Training Centre will empower its students in securing suitable employment after their graduation which will also make a positive impact to Fiji’s trade, industrial and agricultural sectors,” he said.

The Chevalier Training Centre is a Catholic Church run vocational institute that provides skills based training for underprivileged youths of Fiji.

The centre is managed by the Chevalier Youth Trust Board under the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart.
