World Suicide Prevention Day

Neelz Singh, Lami

This day is observed on September 10 each year to promote worldwide action to prevent suicides.

Various events and activities are held during this occasion to raise awareness that suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death.

For every person who completes a suicide, many more may have attempted to end their lives but were unsuccessful.

Suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death which is influenced by psycho-social, cultural and environmental risk factors that can be prevented through worldwide responses that address these main risk factors:

Stigmatisation regarding suicide.

Depression or stress or family problems or a financial burden

Lack of knowledge or awareness of the risk factors which could lead an individual to choose to commit suicide.

Some possible measures which could be useful in addressing this social problem include the following:

Distribution of publications about suicide awareness and prevention.

Using media programmes to promote suicide awareness and prevention.

Having training courses about suicide and depression awareness.

Counselling, for example, through a readily available Help-line.

World Suicide Prevention Day gives organisations, government agencies and individuals a chance to promote awareness about suicide, mental illnesses associated with suicide, as well as suicide prevention measures which could be adopted to address the issue.

Waiting sheds

Shariff Shah, Savusavu

Can the authorities concerned advise the travelling public as to why there is no waiting shed at the wharf in Taveuni and Natuvu in Buca Bay?

Hundreds of people travel to and from these two locations every day.

They all get wet when it rains and slip away to the bushes when nature calls.

Can the relevant authorities look into this before the next election?

After all we are on the wet side of Fiji.

Well done, Fiji Airways

Losalini Elizabeth, Suva

The service on our national airline Fiji Airways deserves praise. It is a point of difference we should all be proud of.

I travel between the Middle East and Fiji and always come as far as Hong Kong or Singapore on one of the three famous airlines from the Middle East.

Getting on Fiji Airways for the final leg home is always the best part. The service from our Fiji Airways cabin crew is always much better, friendlier and more genuine than on the “famous” airlines.

Human Rights Question

Sukha Singh, Labasa

I would be very grateful to the management of the Labasa Sikh Temple if they can let me know through this medium if the Temple ban placed on me from 31/1/2013 is still in place.

I would like to tell the management and the Fiji Human Rights Commission that my human rights are being violated.

I would like to know if I will ever be allowed back into the Labasa Sikh Temple.
