The Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Inia Seruiratu, says more than 40 per cent of Fiji’s population actually live in the rural and remote areas.

In his response to the Presidential Address in Parliament yesterday, Mr Seruiratu said it was a challenge for them to retain this figure.

He said the solution lay within addressing the rights of the Fijian rural dwellers and such was the duty of the Members of Parliament.

He said for Fijian villages and communities, village life had lost its appeal because of the absence of what the current generation perceived as valuable.

This, he said, would include good education and well-resourced health facilities
