Working on community projects is the new way forward for engineers of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

Commanding Officer (CO) engineers Lieutenant Colonel Semi Mocelutu said whenever they were working on a project in a village they would also work on other projects in neighbouring communities, if requested.

“The work is free as this is part of our community outreach programme,” he said.

Recently he said, he received a request from Burenitu in Ra from three old women seeking the RFMF engineers to build their homes.

A team, he said was sent over and they built two new homes and repaired the other. The team also worked on other projects in the village and then returned to camp.

Lieutenant Colonel Mocelutu said they also received another request from Nativi Village in Ra.

A team was sent to the village to look at the kind of work required and once they submitted their report, a team would be deployed to the village.

He said there seemed to be a shortage of carpenters because of the high number of rehabilitation work going in other parts of the country after Cyclone Winston.

Another team, he said, had just returned from Kumi Village in Tailevu after the construction of their ablution bock. He said they were also working on roads. One grader is working in Kadavu while the other in Gau.

Lieutenant Colonel Mocelutu said the response also from the communities were positive where many commended their work and the quality of work when the projects were completed.
