Team Fiji swimming rep Netani Ross was treated to a surprise party by Team Fiji officials and athletes.

The Nadi based-swimmer turned 17 and was presented a birthday cake at the Suvarnabhumi Suite in Thailand last Friday.

Despite being far from home and away from the people that he loved, Ross says, he felt at home amongst the athletes and officials.

“I was really surprised that the whole team actually bought a birthday cake just for me, that was something I was not expecting,” he said.

“It was a really special day for me and I felt a bit sad not being with my family on this day but the team made my day and put a huge smile on my face.

“Even though I don’t know half of the athletes from the different sports, I feel like the whole of Team Fiji is my family and it is good to know that even when you are a long way from home that you have someone who is always thinking of you.

“I’m glad I got to celebrate my birthday with this amazing bunch of athletes.”

Looking ahead to the competition, Ross says, he is eager to get out there and do his first event as this is something he has been waiting for.

“Travelling such a long distance just makes it even more exciting to go out there and compete and I really cannot wait. Competing in this competition for the first time is scary and nerve wrecking but at the same time I want to experience what it is like. I hope to break all of my national records and set some new personal bests in this competition and I’m confident that I will do good.”
