World Climate Action Leaders Reaffirm COP23 Support

Thirty-four countries were represented at the Ministerial Meeting on Climate Action hosted by the Governments of Canada and China and the European Union on September 15 to 16, 2017, in Montreal, Canada.

Incoming COP23 President and Fiji’s Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, was joined by Fiji’s chief negotiator, Ambassador Nahzat Shameem Khan at the meeting.

The meeting brought together representatives from 33 major economies as well as other key stakeholders, to discuss means of advancing the implementation of the Paris Agreement and expectations for COP23.

Governments represented included Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Ethiopia, EU, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Maldives, Mali, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Morocco, Norway, Poland, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The participants reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Agreement and their support for the Fijian COP23 Presidency.

Under Fiji’s leadership, the global community will work towards defining the guidelines for the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

As the first small island developing state to hold the role of COP President, many countries expressed their support for Fiji leading the global effort to increase ambition and accelerate climate action around the world.

On the margins of the meeting, the Honourable Prime Minister held bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada. Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his support for the Fijian COP Presidency and for the full implementation of the Paris Agreement.
