Fijians In Mexico Grateful For Safety As Death Toll In Quake Rises

Viliame Sosowale Qarau said he and family were blessed to have been out of harm’s way at the time the earthquake wreaked havoc in Mexico City and elsewhere.

The 22-year-old who is staying in Coacalco de Berriozábal, about an hour’s drive from Mexico City, has been living there with his parents on a church-related mission for three years.

Recent overseas reports have recorded as many as 295 deaths in Mexico City and elsewhere.

The magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck on September 19 and the epicenter was in the state of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City, the US Geological Survey said.

It occurred on the anniversary of the country’s deadliest earthquake that struck in 1985 and killed 9500 people.

In a Facebook message, Mr Qarau said: “We witnessed and felt the protection of the Lord during our stay in Mexico and we are thankful to Him.”

Mr Qarau said if anything their only request was for Fijians to remember them in their prayers.

“We were home during the earthquake, and did not feel anything but we are glad and thankful to have felt the protection of the Lord,” he said.

“Thank you for thinking of us, who are here in Mexico.”
