Alleged rapist appears in court intoxicated

A man charged with rape appeared at the Suva High Court in an intoxicated condition yesterday.

The case has been adjourned to October 11, to fix a trial date.

Judge Justice Riyaaz Hamza has warned Paula Navukula that on the date he has to come to court in a fit state with proper attire.

Defence counsel Talei Kean assured the court that she had counselled Navukula upon arrival and had scolded him for his behaviour.

It is alleged that between May 29 and 30, this year at Navua, Navukula raped a 25-year-old woman.

The state was represented by Lavenia Bogitini.


Judge seeks medical examination report of alleged rapist

Judge Justice Riyaaz Hamza has sought the medical examination of a 73-year-old man charged with four counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault.

Mr Hamza has ordered both defence and state counsels to ascertain the accused’s physical condition as to why he cannot stand in the dock.

State counsel Lavenia Bogitini informed the court that a medical examination has been conducted on the accused however they have not received the report in regards to his physical condition.

The alleged incidents occurred between January 1, 1982 and November 21, 2016 in Rakiraki and Suva.

It is alleged that the accused had raped his daughter when she was 15-years-old and had impregnated her.

It is further alleged that he had raped his daughter’s daughter as well.

The case has been adjourned to October 11, for mention.


Uncle further remanded for alleged rape

A 25-year-old man charged with rape has been further remanded by the Suva High Court.

The matter was called before Judge Justice Riyaaz Hamza yesterday.

State counsel Taitusi Tuenuku informed the court that the defence will not be challenging the caution interview.

Mr Tuenuku has sought 14 days for the proposed agreed facts.

Defence counsel Talei Kean said that there were no admissions in the caution interview statement.

It is alleged that the accused raped his 5-year-old niece on July 16, this year at Nausori.

The case has been adjourned to October 11, for mention.


Valesasa pleads not guilty to rape

A 41-year-old man charged with rape has pleaded not guilty at the Suva High Court yesterday.

Saimoni Valesasa appeared before Judge Justice Riyaaz Hamza and has further remanded in custody.

It is alleged that on May 13, this year, Valesasa raped a 3-year-old girl at Lami.

Defence counsel Talei Kean has sought 14 days to respond to the proposed agreed facts.

The case has been adjourned to October 11, for mention.


Woman teacher bailed

A 31-year-old primary school teacher appeared at the Suva Magistrates Court charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.

Magistrate Deepika Prakash granted bail to Kaushal Sujata Lal in the sum of $300 yesterday.

Constable Roneel Ram served full phase disclosures.

Lal produced one surety who signed a surety bond of $300. Her bail conditions are that she is not to reoffend and she is not to interfere with the prosecution witnesses.

It is alleged that on September 22 at Lami Lal assaulted a student causing her actual bodily harm.

The case has been adjourned to October 16, for plea.
