Trade unions have taken their battle to the Employment Relations Tribunal against Government on collective agreements and individual contracts.

This is after the Government rejected a claim for a 15 per cent pay increase across the board for civil servants from the Confederation of Public Sector Unions.

An application for a secret ballot for a strike planned by the Fiji Public Service Association, Fiji Teachers Union, Fijian Teachers Association and Fiji Nursing Association from September 25 to October 6 has also been rejected by the Registrar of Trade Unions.

Confederation’s Secretary General Rajeshwar Singh last night told members at the Fijian Teachers Association hall in Suva that the tribunal had accepted their papers to challenge the Registrar of Trade Unions next month.

“The matter will be called on the 4th of October before the Tribunal and this is a moral victory for all of us, “ Mr Singh said.

He reiterated that the unions had a strong and solid case against the Registrar of Trade Unions.

Meanwhile, the Registrar of Trade Unions earlier rejected the secret ballot of the various unions because they failed to meet the requirements under the Employment Relations Promulgation Amendment Act 2015.

The Registrar advised the unions that the notice had been rejected on the basis that no negotiations had been undertaken between the Government and the unions as required under the amended Act.

Meanwhile, Mr Singh said the meeting,  which saw Fiji Nurses Association, Fiji Teachers Union and Fiji Public Service Association members come together, was long overdue.
