Fiji will be hosting a Regional Post Disaster Debriefing from November 4 – 8.

This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun by the Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu at the Grand Pacific Hotel (GPH) yesterday.

The event will be funded by the Australian government. Mr Seruiratu said Australia wanted the meeting to be held in Fiji so that participants from the Pacific region hear of the progress on the work on the destruction by Cyclone Winston.

He said the Australian government was amazed with the country’s speedy recovered after Cyclone Winston.

“They are already putting into practice what they had learned while they were helping in the recovery work as in some states they had already built their evacuation centres,” he said.

As a result of the impact of climate change the minister said some cyclones were now forming after the cyclone season.

He highlighted three lessons learned from Winston –

i) How we live in the future – we need to be proactive

ii) Decide on the way to do development  – the environmental impact

iii) Cooperation – internally, nationally and with overseas partners.

Mr Seruiratu reminded members of the NDMC that it was time they developed their respective disaster plans to be in line with the National Disaster Plan.

He also invited the members to be in Lami tomorrow when they would be testing the tsunami siren.
