Opposition political parties have urged Parliament’s  Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights to ensure changes they seek in electoral rules are tabled by February next year.

The opposition parties’ have raised their concerns on the electoral rules they claim do not enhance free, fair and credible elections for next year.

Their recommendations were submitted to the standing committee  yesterday.

The parties comprised the Social Democratic and Liberal Party (SODELPA), National Federation Party (NFP), Fiji Labour Party (FLP), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Fiji United People’s Party (FUPP) and Unity Fiji (UF).

“Time is of the essence,” chairperson Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights Ashneel Sudhakar said.

“We will do our best to look into all submissions,” he said.

“We did advise that there would be a sitting between the committee and the parties where the parties would be giving their last submission.”

Mr Sudhakar said the next election is expected to be held between April and October 2018 and they would have to immediately look into the submissions.

The leaders present were SODELPA’s Sitiveni Rabuka, Fiji United Freedom Party’s Jagath Karunaratne and Fiji Labour Party’s Mahendra Chaudhry.

Also present were National Federation Party’s Vice President Seni Nabou and NFP member Siddiq Faizal Koya with Unity Fiji’s Satish Kumar.
