Rusivakula sisters Afa and Maliana played for the first time for the Vicki Wilson-coached Fijian Pearls against South Africa in Suva a few weeks ago.

Yesterday, they departed for their first national duty together with the team for the Europe Tour.

Maliana, the Year 12 student of Jasper Williams High School, was part of the Fijian Baby Pearls that finished fourth in the Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana last month.

Maliana earlier openly challenged her elder sister Afa Rusivakula for a spot in the Fijian Pearls team. And finally she is living that dream.

“I am really excited to play outside of Fiji with her (Afa) as is more experienced,” 18-year old Maliana said.

Afa at times pushed her to the limit during training which brings the best out of her.

“Sometimes during training, I get roughed but it is good that I get to learn from it,” she added.

“I expect to learn more from experienced players and from others in the team as well. They tend to be pushing us to the limits.

Afa said, “I am really honoured to have her in the team and looking forward to play more competition together especially in representing Fiji. Hopefully we can click in the court.”

Afa made her debut for the Fiji Pearls in 2010 and was impressed at the Netball World Cup Sydney 2015. She earned a contract with the Celtic Dragons in the UK Super League.

She is able to play goal shoot and goal attack, a patient attacker with a good sense of timing.

Their mother Kesaia Rusivakula and Aunt Elenoa Ravouvou did represented Lautoka both as goal shooters. Kesaia also played for the national side.

“I feel proud to see my nieces continue with the family legacy,” said Ravouvou who was present to farewell the team.

The team will face Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
