Mixed opinion by the  assessors on rape accused

The assessors have delivered a mixed opinion in the rape case involving a British Army officer.

British Army officer Samisoni Tikoinasautabua who is charged with two counts of rape and a count of sexual assault had his trial in absentia after he chose not to attend court for the trial yesterday.

The trial of Tikoinasautabua is being heard before Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe.

It is alleged that Tikoinasautabua on August 7, 2015 at Suva, raped and sexually assaulted a sportswoman who has represented the country on many sporting events and is 27-years-old.

Assessor one found Tikoinasautabua not guilty on all three counts.

Assessor two found him guilty on two counts of rape and not guilty on a count of sexual assault.

Assessor three found him guilty on one count of rape and sexual assault and not guilty on the second count of rape.

The State was represented by Kimberley Semisi.

The judgement will be delivered later today.
