Basic Industries Will Go Bigger In The Tile Glue Market Next Year

As millions of dollars are spent annually on importing tile glue, Fijian Holdings Limited is taking every chance they can get to fill the gaps in the local market.

Fijian Holdings Limited Group chief executive officer Nouzab Fareed shared the birth of a new division, Tile Glue, at Basic Industries Limited.

Basic Industries Limited is made up of two major divisions, Standard Concrete Industries and Humes Industries.

“Our country has been importing tile glue, which is a waste of money when we can easily make it locally,” said Mr Fareed.

The Group has invested $2 million into starting the new division with brand new equipment.

The factory is located in Nasinu, within the premises of Standard Concrete Industries.

Basic Industries Limited chief executive officer Mosese Volavola said the launch of the division will take place in January, 2018.

“The construction of the plant is finished and we are just awaiting for some imported materials to arrive,” said Mr Volavola.

The construction started in early June and the main challenge faced by the company was getting someone to build the plant and warehouse, said Mr Volavola.

Therefore the company was left with no choice but to build it themselves.

Although there are other local companies producing tile glue, Mr Voalvola says Basic Industries will do it in a “much bigger scale”.

Raw Materials

The new division is basically another extension to the company.

Majority of the raw materials for producing the product is available .

“The raw materials comes out of the quarry division. All we have to do is add chemicals since it comes out of products like concrete and aggregate,” he said.

Demand for Tile Glue

Mr Volavola agrees that our local construction sector is booming.

“As you know, the construction industry is booming at the moment and so the demand for all construction materials are big and this includes tile glue. Majority of tile glue is imported from overseas especially those in the local hardware stores and so we want to take advantage of the demand,” said Mr Volavola.

Price of Tile Glue

He added that 20 kg of tile glue sold at $20 is the cheapest price available in our hardware stores.

Majority of the glue that is available in stores are either from Australia or New Zealand and well-known brands charge a bit more.

“We are always looking at new products and since this product will be locally made, we can sell it at a cheaper price. So this is a big advantage for our customers,” Mr Volavola added.

It is too early to tell what the production per hour is for the new division.

By next week, Basic Industries will also start producing one of their products, plaster mix, using the tile glue machine.
