In Court: Infanticide Case Facts Presented In Court

Proper summary of facts in relation to an infanticide case was presented in the Suva High Court yesterday.

Tavenisa Raceva, a 39-year-old single mother from Navua appeared before judge, Justice Salesi Temo, to hear the facts of the case against her.

It was heard that Raceva has six children, three of whom aged 11-years-old, 5-years-old and 4-years-old lived with her.

On March 2 this year, Raceva gave birth to a baby boy at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital and was discharged on March 9.

After she was discharged she boarded the bus from Suva to go to Navua and placed the newborn baby inside a red duffle bag.

The court heard that Raceva met her son in Navua and while waiting for another bus to go home the baby started crying.

Raceva who had hidden her pregnancy from her family members told her son not to tell anyone about the baby.

It was revealed that later that day Raceva suffocated the baby until he stopped breathing and died.

She then wrapped the baby’s body in a white sheet and placed him beside their pit toilet.

It was heard that Raceva murdered her new born child because she was afraid her family would not accept the child.

The case was adjourned to October 27 for defence counsel to indicate whether they agreed with the prosecution’s summary of facts or not.

Raceva has been further remanded in custody.
