Tavua, Dreketi, senior league players impress coach Gamel

Vodafone national football head coach Christophe Gamel is going to look for potential players in today’s Courts Interdistrict Championship (IDC) semi-finals at Churchill Park, Lautoka.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday the no-nonsense coach confirmed that he’s going to name the national football squad tomorrow.

“There will be new players included into the national team,” Gamel said.

“Some from these new players are from the senior league since I’m very impressed with their level of performance. It has been easy for me to identify them because they’ve expressed their skills fully during the IDC. Some youths who are just 17-years-old have also displayed good football and we need to opt for our younger players as well.”|

Gamel pointed out that he was impressed with the performance of minnows Dreketi and newcomers Tavua in the premier division.

“Dreketi and Tavua’s performance have been super. Even though these teams are small they have proven otherwise with their spectacular performance.”

Dreketi after two losses in their pool games held favourites Ba to a 2-2 draw while Tavua also held Nadi and Lautoka to a draw. It was unfortunate that the Anand Sami coached- side lost to Suva 3-1 and narrowly missed out on qualifying to the semi-finals

“I was also impressed with Ba’s performance but not with the defending champions Labasa.”

Gamel said overall he has seen a lift in the teams’ performance.

“The teams have lifted their standards and even the senior league teams have also improved. We’ve seen less kick and chase and as the head coach of the national football side I’m happy with the changes.”

Gamel said football in the country is going into a new era and there’s more to be done to improve our standard.
