Pre-COP Meeting Starts Tomorrow
October 15
12:09 2017

Over 300 delegates from 64 countries are expected in the country during the Pre-COP which is being described by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change staff as “the biggest Pre-COP in history.”

The meet starts tomorrow on Denarau Island, Nadi at Sheraton Fiji Resort and The Westin Denarau Island Resort and Spa.

Current COP22 President Salaheddine Mezouar, UN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohamed and many other political leaders and ambassadors will be joining the incoming COP23 President Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and the Fijian COP23 Presidency leadership team

The Pre-COP has been a massive logistical exercise which, combined with a much stronger than expected tourism surge, has stretched Nadi and Denarau to its accommodation limits.

Over 300 delegates have registered for the Pre-COP which is an important lead-in to the Convention of the Parties for the United Nations Climate Convention in Bonn in three weeks time.  The Pre-COP is an important chance to provide insights into the expectations various countries have for COP23 and to enhance mutual understanding of political priorities and views.

There are numerous heads of state and leaders from the Pacific, including Nauru,  Tuvalu and Palau.

New Zealand and Samoa’s Deputy Prime Ministers will be attending and there are Ministers  and senior climate negotiators from many countries including China, India, US, France, South Africa, Australia, Estonia and other nations across the Pacific.
