A double hulled canoe, the Drua, sailed into Port Denarau, Nadi, yesterday, with a scroll carrying the wishes of the Fijian people on climate change.

As the sun began to set, the Drua made a ceremonial appearance for the international gathering of pre-COP event on Denarau Island.

In Bonn, delegates will see a replica of the Drua as a symbol of not only the Fijians but nationalities from other small island nations, threatened by rising sea level and wild weather patterns, caused by climate change.

This was a historic moment for Year 7 student of Shri Ram Govind Memorial Primary School, Lautoka, Shreya Kumar, who accompanied Climate Champion Inia Seruiratu on board the Drua.

She later presented the scroll to Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

The scroll will then make its journey to Bonn.

Shreya was all smiles when she handed over the scroll.

She said it was a moment she would never forget.

“I feel very proud to be part of this historic event. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me to travel on the Drua with a Government Minister,” she said.
