The Diwali spirit at the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) yesterday demonstrated an environment of inclusivity.

“Regardless of their different ethnic backgrounds, the staff of FBC turned up at work excited and dressed up in traditional Indian attire for the celebration,” said FBC chief executive officer, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

In saying so Mr Sayed-Khaiyum implied that this spirit was the actual representation of a modern and united Fiji.

The FBC office and studios were decorated with lights, crepe papers and rangoli as every department was determined to win the best decorated department contest.

The pinnacle of the celebration and competition was the fashion show.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said that the change of environment from time to time boosted better productivity and also an opportunity for FBC staff to display their talents.

“Through such celebrations we can practically demonstrate unity, inclusivity not only among our staff but our viewers and listeners as well,” he said.

“To demonstrate an environment of having a sense of belonging through cultural celebrations, Diwali is one of those festivals in Fiji that transcends all ethnicity because everyone has fun.

“It’s all about fireworks, sharing and having a good time with friends and families.”

The department decorations and the best costume were judged by fashion designer, Samson Lee.

“What makes me happy is that 90 per cent of our staff regardless of their ethnicity took part in this celebration,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“It was not only that, they also took interest in decorating their work space and dressed up for the occasion.”
