Women and children should not be neglected, says Minister of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa during the Natewa Day celebration at Tukavesi Village in Cakaudrove.

“As we are into the festive season, it is important to pay attention to our children so they don’t feel neglected,” Mrs Vuniwaqa said yesterday.

Originally from Natewa, Mrs Vuniwaqa said she was blessed to be part of the annual event organised by women of Natewa Village to enjoy and have a talanoa session with them.

“This is a good programme organised by the women as it gathers women and children together,” she said.

“It is a sign of unity and strengthens the bond of all seven villages in the district of Natewa. Such programme helps improve the livelihood of families and communities to help minimise the number of poverty cases or neglect cases in our country.”

She hopes to witness similar gatherings in the future.

The day was celebrated with a live band and various forms of traditional dances performed by the villagers. The women also displayed their handicrafts.

Vilisita Delana of Vusaratu in the Natewa District said she was able to learn new weaving skills adding that these programmes helped individuals showcase their talents.
