in battle

Jale Bainisika lifted the morale of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces rugby team ahead of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl annual challenge at the ANZ Stadium in Suva today.

The 101-years-old war veteran presented the team’s jerseys at the Forces Training Ground in Nasinu yesterday.

Bainisika was a member of the 1st Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment (FIR) which fought in World War II in Solomon Islands in 1944.

“Members of the FIR were heroes. After World War II the Americans respected us and we were known to the world for our bravery,” he told the RFMF team.

It was an emotional moment in the FTG camp when Bainisika entered the hall. The team stood up as a sign of respect for the Tailevu man.

Bainisika, who hails from Namata, Raralevu in Tailevu, reminded the players the importance of having God by their side in times of combat.

“Members of the FIR had a Bible in their pocket and cigarettes in the other. You either smoke a cigarette or read the Bible. And you know why we were victorious? Because God was our leader,” he added.

RFMF rugby captain Isake Katonibau gave his assurance to Private Bainisika that the Ratu Sukuna Bowl will be at Queen Elizabeth Barracks when the dust settles at Laucala tonight.

“You fought for all of us, your victory in the Solomons is in our blood, minds and having you here with us will boost our morale for the battle against Police.

“We are ready and prepared to win and get the Ratu Sukuna Bowl back at QEB,” Katonibau said.

The game kicks-off at 6pm. Police won the annual clash for the last two years.
