Seven nurses are part of the 80 personnel contingent going to serve under the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) for Golan Heights between Syria and Israel.

Sergeant Vane Matakece is one of the nurses given the opportunity to serve under the UNDOF. The 48-year-old of Macuata has been serving as a nurse for 22 years for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.

Preparing to board her plane for the trip, Ms Matakece said the journey would be an interesting one after she had to adjust to army life. She said the training was a smooth transition.

“I began my preparation in May this year; I left Labasa for Suva for training and then spent six weeks in Nadi,” she said.

“At first it was all new to me having to learn everything from scratch, on how to hold a gun, physical fitness and survival techniques, but all in all I really enjoyed it.”

It was an emotional moment as Ms Matakece farewelled her five children and husband at the Nadi International Airport yesterday.

“My family has been with me all the way through training and farewelling my kids today (yesterday) is one of the hardest thing I will have to do as a mother,” she said.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces Chief of Staff Ro Jone Kalouniwai said the trip included both troops travelling to Lebanon and Syria. This include doctors, nurses, logistic officers and engineers.

Meanwhile last Saturday, 119 personnel returned from peace keeping duties from the Golan.
