The Nauru Police Commissioner Corey Caleb has shown keen interest in further developing Police co-operation with the Fiji Police Force.

This was highlighted during a courtesy call to the Deputy Commissioner of Police Isikeli Ligairi at Police Headquarters on Tuesday.

Commissioner Caleb is leading a four member delegation and their two day visit is consistent with a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Fiji on Police co-operation in 2015.

Commissioner Caleb said with the agreement coming to an end in 2018 they were eager to get talks underway to extend the cooperation between the two institutions.

“We have a lot to learn from Fiji in various areas of policing and we are particularly interested in disaster management, maritime, water Police, traffic, training and the Bands.”

There are currently seven Nauru Police officers undergoing training at the Fiji Police Academy with five on recruit training and two completing the Superintendent Qualifying Course.

Commissioner Caleb said they are looking forward to the passing out of their five officers as they will be utilised to provide further training in Nauru.

“Being a product of the Academy myself and undergoing the same recruit’s course during my days, I have a lot of expectations of our officers who have been chosen to undergo the recruit’s course,” he said

Police Deputy Commissioner Isikeli Ligairi said the Police Force supported the move to extend the MoU.

“The Fiji Police Force has received interests from other Pacific island nations and we are ready to provide assistance in selected dedicated policing fields.”
