World-renowned Sabri Brothers who are considered to be the first Qawwali singers to introduce the Western countries to the soulful music performed last night at the Lautoka Girmit Centre.

They were the first performers to perform Qawwali outside of Asia- at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1975.

The famous qawwals are in the country on their Pasifika Tour as part of the 70th anniversary of India’s Independence.

Joining the audience was Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

“We welcome the Indian Sabri brothers and thank the Indian Government for organising this cultural event which will go on for a number of months,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“I would like to of course acknowledge the Girmit Centre for hosting us here this evening and the various people working behind the scene organising it.”
