A Human Resource executive says that the human resource department plays a major role in ensuring that their employees are not caught in huge financial debts.

Bank South Pacific general manager Human Resources Howard Politini while speaking at the BSP Fiji Human Resources Institute National Convention 2017 at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Denarau Island yesterday, said the department had the capacity to monitor their employees’ financial status because they had access to their pay slips.

Mr Politini said the financial debt could lead to so many problems which can later affect productivity in a certain workplace.

He added that financial debt led to self-imposed stress which could have an impact on the wellbeing of employees.

Mr Politini said it was the role of human resources to put their employees through financial counselling if they know things were getting out of hand.

For instance, he said as a banking institution they had access to people’s salary and it was disappointing to see that most people had zero balances on their pay slip due to deductions.

This is one of the major problems which banking institutions faced on a daily basis.

“One of the most distracting factors of any human being is financial stress , today we find in the bank where we bank others like your employees because of the process we go through , we have access to how much is on the pay slip on the pay day.

“I am utterly dismayed that some of the pay slips that are coming from some employers have nothing left in their pay because it has been deducted and we discussed the matter with their superiors,” he added.

Seeking financial counselling, Mr Politini said was something that human resource managers should instil in their employees because they handled their financial status through the pay slips.
