Labasa Sangam (SKM) College principal Luisa Ratuvuku told her 54- member staff yesterday to be pro-active by urgently getting a medical check for breast cancer.

Ms Ratuvuku made the comment during their Pinktober morning tea at school yesterday.

“We even have blood cancer patients at Labasa Hospital and it is very sad to note that Fiji’s current statistic shows that the youngest cancer victim is 17-years-old,” Mrs Ratuvuku said.

“We have been observing Pinktober day in the school since 2015 and I urge each and every one of us to get a thorough medical check-up including the males urgently,” she said.

“It is very important to observe this day to raise more awareness among ourselves and then teach our students.”

SKM Labasa College head of language department Neelam Prasad said: “I would like to urge you teachers to raise more awareness on breast cancer and pray for those who are fighting for their lives on hospital beds.

“The pain of carrying cancer cannot be understood.

“But when we read the newspaper articles about breast cancer patients telling their survival stories then only we will be able to understand.”

The teachers recognised Pinktober in ‘kalavata’ (uniforms) over a spread for morning tea.
