“I attended the climate change meeting at Nadi two weeks ago and met with Mr Bainimarama (PM Voreqe Bainimarama) and I assured him to extend my support,” Mr Sopoaga said.

Tuvaluan Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga has commended the bravery and efforts made by Fiji’s Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama for leading COP23.

Mr Sopoaga has vouched to fully support Mr Bainimarama as he will be joining him at Bonn, Germany next week.

“I attended the climate change meeting at Nadi two weeks ago and met with Mr Bainimarama and I assured him to extend my support,” Mr Sopoaga said.

In a recent interview with Mr Sopoaga last week at the recent 70th anniversary of the Tuvalu people settling on Kioa Island, he said there was no other way.

“The reason is very simple,” he said.

“We have no other option and there is no Plan B for Pacific Island countries affected by climate change.

“We have to fight for our rights and the only battle that we can win is reducing the global surface temperature to 1.5 degree Celsius.

“We don’t have any other option.

“Tuvalu and many other small island states including Fiji are badly affected by climate change,” he said.

He said the effects of climate change was real and was a serious issue.

“I am grateful to see Mr Bainimarama and his people and Government making every effort for this COP23 meeting to be successful,” Mr Sopoaga said.

He said Tuvalu had a special relationship with Fiji and this important value of human connection would be maintained.
