For 30-year-old Police Constable Mereani Vatavei travelling

to Bonn, Germany, as part of the Fiji Police Force band meant travelling in an airplane for the first time. The mother of four from Tailevu has travelled around Fiji but coming in via Hong Kong to Frankfurt was an incredible first time experience.

Last night she shared her excitement with Fiji Sun at the Bonn Marriot World Conference Hotel where she had joined her 29 fellow band members and police officers who presented a sevusevu to Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

“It feels really good. Most of the time I had travelled around Fiji, in boats and via roads but this was the first time I ew on an air- plane and I am having an amazing time,” she said.

“It is my st trip and that too, to Europe has been just wonderful.”

She said she was sharing her excitement with her children as well.

The band will perform at the traditional Fijian ceremony during the opening of the COP23 conference. Apart from that, they will be performing at most cocktails and also at the closing ceremony. The team departs Bonn and returns on November 20.

Leading the team is seasoned band master Assistant Superintendent Ilaitia Tamani Vakatalai. He joined the team as the officer in charge in 2016.

Prior to that, he had been a key player in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces band for 26 years where he was the Director of Music.

“It is an honour to be given this opportunity by the Prime Minister of Fiji to come and represent Fiji in Bonn. It is a one-off opportunity for something of this magnitude to be held. This is the first time the Band has been selected by Government for an international event,” ASP Vakatalai said.

“There are a few in the Band for whom this is the first time to come on a tour. And, most of the times the Fiji Police Force has toured the Pacific and as far as Japan or Hong Kong but for many of us, this is the first trip to Europe.”
