Of the 7000 elderly people benefitting from the Government pension scheme in Vanua Levu, 3000 are from Macuata while 4000 are from the provinces of Bua and Cakaudrove.

Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Veena Bhatnagar revealed the figures during her visit at Valebasoga in Labasa, yesterday.

Minister Bhatnagar said interested applicants need to meet eligibility requirements.

“Senior citizens who are 65 years and above are entitled for the schemes,” Minister Bhatnagar said.

“Those senior citizens who are eligible and are applying for the social pension scheme should submit their applications with their birth certificates and two passport photos so that when applications are approved, payments can be done immediately,” she said.

She said the Social Welfare Department receives about a thousand welfare forms in a day.

“It takes three months to process an application as there are a lot of steps that need to be followed.”

She reminded aspiring recipients to include all the necessary details when filling in their individual applications.

The senior citizen allowance has been increased to $100.

“Those who are no longer working and through the compassion of the Government, we have increased the allowance to $100,” she said.
