Italy must score more than 48 points to go through

The Italian rugby league side must beat the Vodafone Fijian Bati by 48 points or more on Friday night in Canberra if they are to stand a chance of qualifying for the World Cup quarterfinals.

The Italians bounced back from the 36-12 loss to Ireland to wallop United States of America 46-0 in Townsville, Australia, on Sunday.

This was before the Fijian Bati thrashed Wales 72-6.

According to Sydney Morning Herald, USA captain Mark Offerdahl gave the impression he didn’t give Italy much hope of inflicting rampant Fiji’s first loss of the World Cup.

“Fiji’s a lot harder,” Offerdahl said.

“I know they’re close as scorelines but I’ve never been as sore (as I was) after playing Fiji. I don’t know, it’ll be a good game , Italy and Fiji.”

At GIO Stadium on Friday night Cameron Ciraldo’s side needs a massive win to progress. Not only were Fiji stronger, Offerdahl said, but “that was a better game for us than Fiji.”

For Italy, it was the end of a tough week which started sensationally with forward Shannon Wakeman punching Sydney Roosters-bound James Tedesco at Pier Bar in Cairns.

Wakeman was reportedly banished from camp for a day and threatened with the sack. World Cup organisers are still investigating.
