Seventeen-year-old Ro Kevueli Tavainavesi of England yesterday cycled in from Brussels to Bonn, Germany a journey of around 200 kilometres to raise awareness about climate change.

The student who cycled alongside National Disaster Management Minister and Fiji’s climate champion Inia Seruiratu was quick to point out that he was from Beqa.

He was encouraged to sign up on this challenging task by his mother Sera Basasei Tavainavesi.

When Kevueli was in Year Seven, he was told during a geography class that in 50 years time, Fiji will be under water because of rising sea levels.

“At that time I wasn’t so sure on how to feel or if the statistic I was given correct because it upset me knowing that my homeland was potentially going to be swallowed by the ocean,” Mr Tavainavesi said. “But I now know, as a member of the youth generation that my role is important to our future,” he said.

And, he has a message for fellow young Fijians- you need to stand up and make the difference.

“I encourage you more to cycle around and do your bit.”
