Students Can Use Cards During School Holidays: Education

School students who carry the blue and yellow e-transport cards are allowed to continue using their cards during the school holidays, the Ministry of Education confirmed yesterday.

Permanent Secretary for Education Iowane Tiko clarified that students who used the blue subsidised cards would need to top up their card during the holidays to continue using it.

“Students who fall under the subsidised fare categories are only topped up with funds to cater for school trips. Travels for any other purposes is to be topped up by parents/student or others during the school holidays,” he said.

“The fares will apply as per the Land Transport Authority schedule and a bus driver generally has to manually charge adult fare (tapping cards twice) on student cards if they are over 12 years and not in school uniform.”

He said the cards were provisioned to charge both student and adult fares as per LTA laws.

“Generally speaking parents have a duty of care towards their children. They need to monitor travels of their children and spend quality time with them,” Mr Tiko said.

“Replacement cards come at a cost thus parents need to keep cards responsibly. Check for fares charged while travelling and ensure road safety rules are followed and practice safer travelling.”
