South  Pacific   Tourism Organisation (SPTO) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association.

It is aimed at developing tourism in the private sector and increasing tourism arrivals in the South Pacific.

Chief executive officer Christopher Cocker said it was a  historical moment for the organisation as the agreement was long overdue.

“One of the first things we will do after this agreement is organising sustainable monitoring workshops in Nadi and Suva,” he said.

They will be looking at four divisions.

“It is always good to get a private sector feedback and also input into developing Pacific tourism in the region,” he added.

Mr Cocker said that sustainable tourism development was established two years ago and they have realised its importance.

Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association president Dixon Seeto said, the agreement was a stepping stone in getting to know what the individual organisations do.

“It is also focused in making sure that the industry going forward is going to be developed and it’s going to be sustainable.”

Mr Seeto said that closer link with SPTO will develop the South Pacific Tourism.

“We have the best climate and best people; it’s a natural for the South Pacific.”

The MOU was signed at the SPTO office in Suva yesterday.
