Calls For Closer Watch On Music, Movies, Internet

Corrections officials are finding more alarming triggers that cause sexual offenders to carry out the heinous crimes they are convicted for.

The comment was made by Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) Commissioner, Commander Francis Kean at the conclusion of the 37th Asian and Pacific Conference of Corrections Administrators completed in Nadi on Thursday.

“I call upon the authorities to look at the censorship they are doing. Whether its music, whether its films and movies and the accessibility to the internet,” Commander Kean said.

“This is very important and they play a very significant role in what our kids and elders get to view and see because it’s amazing to know about the trigger mechanisms that cause some of the offenders to commit such a crime.”

Commander Kean called on the corporate teaching of children and youths from a very early start.

“One thing I am very thankful to our Government for is the push for education. We want to be an educated society, we want to be a smart society and that goes down to every child so that no one gets left behind. Education starts from the communities involving our young children; our youths and I hope this message can filter down to every level of society so that we become a stronger community, a stronger society and a stronger nation.” Kean said.

The FCS will look at holding a national forum to address the escalating trend of sexual offenders in Fiji.

“That’s something that the FCS wishes to convene in the foreseeable future, a symposium on how best we can address the escalating trend of sex offenders, looking at how best we can help the victims.”
