Every year $52 million worth of damages are sustained in the agricultural sector through salt water intrusion from coastal flooding.

This is about four per cent of Fiji’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In sharing this alarming statistic, Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau said, changing weather patterns disrupt the supply of resources that help stabilise the Fijian economy.

Mr Koroilavesau took part in a talanoa session on Sustainable Development- lessons learned from the grassroots.

“Fiji remains at the frontline in advocating international policies to counter climate change. But internally, the nation lacks sufficient technical expertise, human resources and financial capacity to fully implement protective measures,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

“The private sector, other Governments and international financial institutions plays and can continue to play key roles in helping Fiji mobilise financing, capacity building, social and environmental advancement in the implantation of integral climate adaptation measures,” he said.
