Motorists have been warned by the Fiji Roads Authority to adhere to the law and drive safely considering the weather conditions.

Drivers are specifically being reminded to use allocated parking spaces.

The warning comes after a loaded truck which was parked on the wrong side of the road a few minutes from Navua Town junction fell into a waterway. As a result part of the road gave way.

It is understood that the driver had parked the truck and left for a restaurant nearby when the incident occurred.

After investigations, FRA general manager Network Operations and Maintenance Aram Goes said the vehicle was parked on the wrong side of the road hard up against the outside edge of a ‘clearly visible deep, steep sided, open drain’.

“Please use the allocated parking spaces,” Mr Goes suggested.

He said that static load placed more load and strain on the ground than moving loads.

“In regards to recent soil movements, no one can give certainty to stability of soil under the influences of the natural forces of gravity and wet environment,” Mr Goes said.
