Man gets one-year jail time for threatening wife

A 35-year-old man was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment at the Nausori Magistrates Court after he pleaded guilty to criminal intimidation.
On September 17 this year Jovesa Waqanivutia chased his wife away after she went to him to pick some money for shopping.
In his sentence, it was revealed that Waqanivutia later went to his wife and threatened her by saying that he would kill her by chopping her to pieces, pack her and send the body pieces to her mother.
He added that he was not afraid of the Police and if she complained he would do something to her before he went to jail.
While sentencing Waqanivutia Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne accepted that his plea was made voluntarily and was unequivocal.
During sentencing Magistrate Somaratne said:“You threatened to kill your wife by chopping her to pieces and send her body parts to her mother.
“You did not consider that your wife was pregnant and carrying your baby in her womb when you made these remarks. Hence in my view a custodial sentence is warranted in this case to denounce your behaviour.”
A permanent domestic violence restraining order was also issued with standard non-molestation conditions.
