Sacrificing play time for study time has paid off for Sidney Otsuka of the LDS Suva Primary School.

The Year Six student was announced the dux during the prizegiving ceremony at the school in Samabula yesterday.

Mother, Vineeta Singh said the recognition did not come as a surprise because her daughter was always a hard worker.

“She had sacrificed her free time, her hobbies and television sessions,” Ms Singh said.

“We had felt sorry at times when she was always studying but we knew it was for her own good benefit. She has to work hard as life is very competitive in terms of school achievements,” she said.

“I had always encouraged her to read and focus on her education to build a better career and life for her.”

Sidney said: “I did a lot of hard work to get this award. I feel I needed to work harder and I am grateful of what I have achieved.

“I will continue with my hard work because I want to be a doctor when I grow up and help sick people get better and feel better.”

Zarom wants to be in the army

Meanwhile, Zarom Kumar scooped the Best All Rounder award and his father, Rakesh was over-the-moon with the announcement.

“I feel very proud of my son’s achievement. It is something I had never expected from him and it came as a surprise to us,” Mr Kumar said.

Zarom said: “I always had my family’s support to keep me going. I was motivated by my older siblings who had previously won similar awards during their time in school.

“I want to keep achieving high awards and scores in school but as for my career path I want to become a soldier. I want to join the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and make my family proud.”
