Asenaca Seru has been waiting for nine years to get her Housing Authority of Fiji offer letter to start a new life, a new home.

And yesterday together with 113 families, she got just that.

“We applied in 2008 and after nine years we’re finally receiving the offer letter and no words can describe the feeling I felt when receiving the letter,” she said at Tacirua where the presentation took place.

“I cried because I was happy. My husband is away for work and he kept calling to make sure I was here today.”

Ms Seru and her family were previously renting around the Suva-Nausori corridor and at the time had applied with the Housing Authority.

She is now living with her husband and daughter at her uncle’s residence in Cunningham.

The 36-year-old woman is a housewife while her husband is a soldier for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

The woman from Kubulau, Bua, says she has saved a modest amount to start building her new home.

Another recipient, Mohammed Rizwan, said he was thankful for the Government assistance.

“It is a dream come true because we have been renting for so long and now we a house of our own,” Mr Rizwan said.

“The feeling is amazing knowing that the wait is finally over. I thank the people involved for making it possible.”

Minister of Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Bala handed over the papers to the families.

He said it was the first time in the history of Housing Authority that such arrangement was happening.

“Fiji’s homeless deserve roofs over their heads and my Government is determined to work in partnership with those who share our vision,” he said.

“I would like to commend the Housing Authority of Fiji in providing access to housing solutions for all Fijians.”
