Talei Bogidua and Jeremiah David Ravatu won the Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year Awards during the Latter-Day Saints Primary School annual prize-giving on Wednesday.

It was a pleasant surprise for the duo and they aim to represent Fiji in netball and rugby.

Bogidua, 11, of Moce, Lau, said the award was the first step to her becoming a national netball rep.

“I love netball and I will train hard to reach my goal,”she said.

“I was motivated to play netball since I was a small while watching the Fijian Pearls play.

“I will give my best to become a Fijian Pearl.”

She plays goal-attack, shooter and wing defender for her school.

Meanwhile, Ravatu, 12, of Matuku, Lau, loves rugby and wants to become the first in his family to be a Flying Fijian.

“I also play football, basketball and swimming but my favourite is rugby as I love to tackle,”Ravatu said.

“I always watch whenever the Flying Fijians play, I never miss it.  I watch them closely how they tackle and I’m confident I will make a national team.

“I will continue playing rugby in high school so I can learn more.”
