Lagi: Never give up

Eparama Lagi, Year Five student of Nausori Special School won the sportsman of the year award yesterday.
It was a few years ago the Navakawau, Taveuni native was to have an operation in Hawaii as he had difficulties in walking.
However, his parents decided against this as there were risks he would be paralysed for life.
Today, Lagi holds his head high and makes his parents proud as he continues to do what he loves and that’s taking part in sporting activities.
The 14-year old has stiff joints and he cannot stretch his legs and he is either aided by a wheelchair or uses his hands to move around.
Lagi was selected by the Fiji Table Tennis Association to be part of the national side for a tour to New Zealand last year and this year he was part of the table tennis team to Australia.
He was also part of the National Games for disabled children in Lautoka this year and won bronze medal.
His mother Josifini Lagi said she was always proud of her son and never doubted that he was and will always be special.
“We have always taught him to be humbled and listen to the elders.
“He loves playing sport, he is friendly and loves to be surrounded by children,” she said.
Lagi dedicated his award to his parents and grandparents who have been beside him throughout his study.
“We must never give up in anything we want to do, just aim high and keep moving forward,” he said.
