Lautoka Maroons Lead

Lautoka Maroons top the overall medal tally after the first day of the FMF Chow Games at Churchill Park yesterday.
One of the two Lautoka sides competing in the two-day event, the Maroons amassed 9 gold, 14 silver and 7 seven bronze medals.
A strong contingent from Nadroga, who were runners-up last year, are in second spot with 8 gold, 9 silver and 7 bronze medals.
In the boys section, Lautoka Maroons lead with 8 gold medals, Nadi on second spot with 3 gold and Ra in third spot.
In the girls section, Nadroga, who won this category last year are ahead with 6 gold medals, followed by Ra and Nadi with four gold medals each.
The early morning showers failed to dampen the spirit of the athletes as competition was intense throughout, especially on the tracks.
While both grandstands were filled to near capacity, the embankment remained empty because of the wet conditions.
Nadroga had some good wins in the 4×400 metres relay and will come out strong today to try and wrestle the crown away from Lautoka.
- Standout performance for yesterday had to be Aminiasi Tavailagi, the nine- year old of Nadroga.
The Nawaicoba Public School athlete took part in the Under-9 long jump and beat the old record of 4.12 metres by jumping 4.15 metres on the first jump.
He then smashed his new record in his second attempt recording 4.19m which is the new record.
- Ratu Isireli Masiwini, of Nadi won the U14 boys 200m clocking 24.5s and has set his sight on joining Marist Brothers High School in Suva next year.
- In the girls section, Unaisi Tagabale of Nadroga, with her superb running style made it back-to-back winning the U13 gold medal last year and scooping the U14 gold yesterday.
The Nakorosule,Naitasiri native wants to join Jasper Williams High School in Lautoka next year.
