2 Died From Tuberculosis On Taveuni

The Turaga na Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu revealed that there has been two tuberculosis (TB) deaths on Taveuni Island this year.

Ratu Naiqama made the revelation while launching the tuberculosis (TB) awareness and wellness campaign supported by Global fund to fight AIDS, TB and malaria on the island on Saturday.

“Of the 13 reported TB cases here on Taveuni two have died in the first nine months this year,” Ratu Naiqama said.

In 2016, the Cakaudrove sub division recorded 35 tuberculosis (TB) cases, while Taveuni recorded 12.

“We need to reach our target of 70 per cent and this can be achieved by allowing our health team to visit your communities,” Ratu Naiqama said.

“You can do your part in preventing TB by following simple yet proven methods like eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, opening up the windows in your homes, sunning out beddings, using a handkerchief to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, do not spit carelessly and seeking professional medical care as soon as possible.

“This TB community grant scheme service encourages members of the local communities to take ownership of their health.

“This improves the Ministry of Health’s service delivery and ties in well with Government’s policy of increasing accessibility of services to the public and taking services to our communities.”
