Cajetina Mua has won a culinary scholarship to Le Cordon Bleu Sookmyung Academy in Seoul in South Korea.

Amongst the 12 female chefs who competed for this scholarship, Ms Mua was rated with the highest points.

This was announced during the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association HOTEC Tradeshow closing cocktail on Friday night at Denarau.

The female chefs were being assessed for four weeks while undergoing training and tests.

The final judging was done at the Denarau Convention Centre on Thursday during HOTEC.

The participants watched as International Master Chef Patissier Amanda Young demonstrates a desert she invented called ‘Pearl of the Pacific.’

The chefs then duplicated the desert and were given 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete the cooking.

“I am speechless as I wasn’t really expecting this,” Ms Mua said.

“The four weeks had been a tough with many challenges, but having to make new friends was the best.”

Ms Mua acknowledged the support of her employer, Kokomo Island Resort.

“Kokomo will be so proud of me and I just can’t wait to tell them the good news.”

She is one of the Pastry Chefs in Kokomo.

Ms Mua will be leaving for Seoul in May next year for her three months course.

All costs are covered by the scholarship.

Organised by The Coliseum, the competition gave an opportunity to young females to improve their culinary knowledge and skills.

The underlying aim of the scholarship was to promote gender balance in hotel kitchens.

The Coliseum director Valentin Chorchado believe that with the right level of education and training women can equally run a kitchen just as well or even better than men.
