Mother Shocked, Trusted Neighbour Accused Of Raping Her Daughter

A mother yesterday told the High Court in Suva how she and her family had trusted a neighbour who, in return,  allegedly raped her daughter.

The accused, a 28-year-old, is now on trial before High Court judge Justice Vincent Perera for one count each of rape, attempt to rape and indecent assault of a 14-year-old girl.

The alleged incident had happened in Nausori last year.

The mother told the court that she was in a state of shock and she could not believe it when she was told that her daughter had been raped by the accused.

When asked by the state prosecutor, Susan Serukai about the relationship between the complainant’s family and the accused, the mother said she knew the accused since his childhood and he drove her to work in his car daily.

“My daughter called him  brother and I could not believe it when I heard his name,” the mother said.

On Monday the complainant gave her evidence in a closed court. The trial continues today. The accused is represented by Suva lawyer, Jitendra Reddy.
