A Government delegation, led by Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, presented its reguregu at the funeral gathering of the late Momo Na Tui Lawa Ratu Sevanaia Vatunitu Nabola Lalabalavu yesterday.

Silence was observed at Solevu Village on Malolo Island yesterday as people gathered to pay their final respects.

The iTaukei protocol was handled by the senior officials of the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs.

Ratu Sevanaia’s  wife, Adi Merewai Lalabalavu, was in tears when the traditional burial rites were performed at the chiefly burial site near his chiefly home.

Adi Merewai said: “He respected me as his wife and also treated me like a queen. He was a very humble and well-spoken gentleman.”

The chief was known for advocating tourism and sustainable development in the Mamanuca Islands.

While delivering his eulogy, Permanent Secretary for iTaukei Affairs Naipote Katonitabua said Ratu Sevanaia was a man of integrity.

He added that he had all the qualities of a humble and kind chief, one who was always ready to help and hear his people.

Plantation Island Resort Executive Brian Kirsch said he was honoured to have had the chance to work with a chief like Ratu Sevanaia.

Mr Kirsch thanked Adi Merewai for being the strength behind Ratu Sevanaia’s success.
