FIJI MASTERS BUILDERS ASSOCIATION: How To Build Right: Advice From The President

We are contractors; we should know our contracts and obli- gations.
This was stated by Fiji Master Build- ers Association (FMBA) President Vijay Raghwan at their annual general meeting yesterday.
Mr Raghwan said one reason why contractors have problems was because they don’t understand the contract and its obligations.
He said that the problem might get worse if it’s not addressed amidst the current construction industry boom.
Mr Raghwan also advised the public
to be aware and be careful when hiring a con- tractor.
“FMBA is willing to give a helping hand to all those who want to build. We might not nec- essarily do the contract but we may give some advice before you start building,” he said.
“It’s important to know the consequences. Consult a lawyer, professional or the banks and know how you can protect yourself.”
He also highlighted the importance of hiring experienced architects rather than those that don’t have the required skills and expertise to do the work.
This is to avoid regrets and losing of money

at the end.
For young graduates, it is advisable for them
to be in the eld for few years, gain some expe- rience before they can be hired.
“Some of the young graduates are being hired to make homes, they don’t have the re- quired expertise. The drawing might be ap- proved but not the entire necessary require- ments,” said Mr Raghwan.
Meanwhile, FMBA had reappointed its ex- ecutive committee members to continue their roles for another year.
