After growing up in Rakiraki and then spending three years at Sigatoka Andhra Sangam College, Mohr Jordan David’s struggle within a changing social environment was rewarded when he was named Dux of Jai Narayan College at the school’s prizegiving ceremony yesterday.

It is remarkable to think that Mohr moved to Suva just last year.

“It’s a really big achievement. I mean coming from a really highly esteemed institution which performs really well academically and I managed to get the highest, I’m just very excited,” he said.

Mohr said the year did not come without its challenges. The star student was involved in many extra – curricular contests such as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics competitions that provided a bit of a strain to his studies.

“There were a lot of challenges. I took part in a lot of contests which meant I had to miss classes, but I just managed to keep working hard and to go with the flow.”

But Mohr said his friends and family were always there to support him.

“I would like to dedicate this to my parents for supporting me throughout the years and also to God – because of Him this was possible,” he said.

Mohr dreams of becoming an engineer and may chase opportunities overseas for further education.

“I’m trying to do something in engineering, maybe civil at FNU, or if not I can go overseas and study,” he said.

“Engineering is really important – as making sure all the buildings and structures are safe for people is so important.

And it’s an outside job, so I don’t really want to be sitting behind the desk, I’ve already done 13 years of that.”

The school dux encouraged all aspiring students to “take the subjects that you love doing so you can enjoy school life”.

The Jai Narayan College’s prizegiving ceremony was a multicultural affair, as the crowd of students, families and teachers were treated to dance performances from around the world.

The dux was also awarded with a $500 cheque while the Principal’s Distinction awardee took home a $300 cheque.
