FEA Explains Cause Of Power Outage

A release from the Fiji Electricity Authority explained the cause for the Suva power outage yesterday. It said the power outage was caused by a third party – road contractors.

The specific areas were: Part of Ratu Sukuna Road Area, Flagstaff, Muanikau Area, Richard Road, Peninsula Hotel, Gordon Street, Service Street, Hamilton Beattie Street, Forum Secretariat, Eden Street, Howell Road, Belo Street and part of Rewa Street.

FEA chief executive officer Hasmukh Patel said: “Teams established that the underground power cable supplying the subject areas had been damaged during excavation works by a contractor working on the road upgrading work at upper Ratu Cakobau Rd. The faulty underground cable was isolated and the power supply to the affected customers was normalised by 1:14pm. Repair works on the damaged underground power cable will continue today and the cable is expected to be repaired by later tonight.

“FEA requests members of the public to verify the presence of FEA underground assets BEFORE carrying out any excavation works. Failure to do this could lead to major accidents leading to injuries/fatalities.

“A “Permit to Dig” is required for any excavations in the vicinity of FEA power cables. To verify the presence of FEA underground assets please contact FEA on 132333. The FEA sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused to all our valued customers due to this unplanned power outage which was beyond our control.”
